Pieter graduated in 2015 as a Master in Sociology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). His master thesis focused on regional differences in the influence of intergenerational social mobility on mortality of young-adults. Immediately after his studies he started at the same university as a doctoral student within the Sport & Society (SASO) research group at the Department of Sports Policy and Management (Faculty of Physical Education and Physiotherapy). Currently he is working on this PhD, promoted by Prof. Dr Marc Theeboom, Prof. Dr. Rein Haudenhuyse and Dr. Hebe Schaillée, in which he will address the question of what the working mechanisms and facilitating conditions are in community sport initiatives that relate to the promotion of social inclusion for at-risk youth, with specific attention for personal development. This PhD is part of the SBO-IWT project ‘CATCH’ (Community sport for AT-risk youth: innovative strategies for promoting personal development, health and social CoHesion), carried out by Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) (research group Sport & Society) and Ghent University (Department of Family Medicine and Primary Health Care and the Department of Social Work and Social Pedagogy). This research project is subsidized by the Flemish government, Flanders innovation and entrepreneurship.
